New Research Investigates if Bedbugs Carry Drug-Resistant BacteriaThe Emerging Infectious Disease Journal has released research indicating that bedbugs can be carries of drug resistant bacteria that can result in bacterial infections. Future research will need to look at if host-to-host transmission is possible. The potential for bedbugs to transmit different bacterial infections may cause panic in the public at large, however it is vital for the general public to understand that the occurrence of bacterial transmission is only plausible and has not yet been confirmed.
Research entomologist Jeffrey White of BedBug Central has released a statement reviewing the study’s findings and offers
.jpg) BedBug Central’s position on the matter:“Bedbugs have long been suspected to have the ability to mechanically transmit bacteria from one host to another. The results of this study sheds more light on this being a possibility, but additional research needs to be conducted to understand the true impact of these findings. While the findings of this study are likely to raise concerns about bedbugs and bacterial transmission in impoverished communities, our primary concern for the public at large remains to be the psychological impact bedbugs have on those suffering from infestations. We understand the anxiety this study’s findings may cause amongst the general public, however, the study only confirms what has long been suspected and more research needs to be conducted to understand the value of this information.”
